VANBRUUN Guide
24 hours in Copenhagen: The VANBRUUN way
A curated Copenhagen guide with calm cafés, iconic streets, thoughtful food, and intentional spaces we return to again and again. Copenhagen is a city that rewards those who slow down, and over time we have discovered a few spots that capture its quiet charm and make every moment feel special.
In this 24-hour guide, we share the VANBRUUN way of experiencing the city. Wandering Nyhavn in the soft morning light, pausing for a rooftop coffee, or ending the day with an intimate dinner. Whether you follow our full route or pick your favorite highlights, this is a gentle, stylish, and unforgettable way to explore Copenhagen.
1. Early morning in Copenhagen — Nyhavn before the city wakes
We always start early. Nyhavn in the morning feels almost untouched: pastel facades, still water in the canal, and streets that belong only to early risers. It is one of the few moments when this iconic harbour feels like a hidden gem.
Why we love it: For a peaceful, cinematic stroll along the iconic harbour.
Best time to visit Nyhavn: Early morning, before cafés and boats come to life.

2. Breakfast in Copenhagen — Atelier September
From Nyhavn, you can choose Atelier September for a classic breakfast: a matcha or cappuccino, their perfect omelette, and warm sourdough set the tone for the day. Alternatively, for a later, relaxed brunch, Sonny offers avocado toast with salmon and a slice of carrot cake in a cosy, intimate atmosphere.
Why we love it: Thoughtful food in iconic Copenhagen cafés.
Best time: 9–10 AM at Atelier September, or late morning at Sonny.

3. Lunch in Copenhagen — Apollo Bar
By midday, Apollo Bar feels like the natural transition into the afternoon. Located in the courtyard of Kunsthal Charlottenborg, it seamlessly blends art, food, and atmosphere. We often order the burrata with red plum or the white fish with mushrooms and seasonal vegetables. Refined but uncomplicated dishes, best enjoyed in daylight with the calm buzz of the city around you.
Why we love it: Seasonal food in one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful courtyards.
Best time: Late morning or lunch.

4. Afternoon coffee — Original Coffee at Illum rooftop
When we want to slow the pace, we head up to Illum rooftop. Above Strøget, the city quiets down and the light softens. We always order their classic BMO, a freshly baked bun with butter and Vesterhavsost. Simple, nostalgic, and deeply Danish.
Why we love it: A calm rooftop break and a true local classic.
Best time: Mid-morning or early afternoon, especially on weekdays.

5. Midday calm — Maison VANBRUUN Copenhagen
As the afternoon unfolds, we step into Maison VANBRUUN Copenhagen, our own retreat in the heart of the city. The space is warm, modern, and intentionally calm, designed for presence rather than pace. Here, you can admire the craftsmanship and detail of our engagement, wedding or jewelry collections on display, or why not try it on? Whether it is a quiet conversation or simply enjoying the atmosphere, this is where the day slows just enough.
Why we love it: Personal service, craftsmanship, and a sense of ease.
Best time: Anytime you want a gentle pause, or a little sparkle.

6. Dinner in Copenhagen — Esmée
We almost always end the day at Esmée. The lighting is warm, the mood intimate, and the ambiance quietly elegant. Our favourites include the lobster roll, Danish wagyu, and their ice cream for dessert, ideally paired with a glass of wine. Refined without feeling overly formal, a great place to unwind after a busy day
Why we love it: Beautifully balanced food in an atmosphere that feels effortlessly sophisticated.
Best time: Evening, when Copenhagen glows and the restaurant comes alive.
